St. John Gabriel Perboyre

St John Gabriel Perboyre

Priest of the Congregation of the Mission
Martyred in China on September 11, 1840
Canonized June 2, 1996

On Sunday, June 2, 1996, Pope John Paul II canonized and declared to the whole world that John Gabriel Perboyre (1802-1840) is officially a saint. Among the Vincentian family, John Gabriel is considered quite popular due to his life and heroic martyrdom which captured imaginations of so many men and women all over the world.

Perboyre was missioned in China when he suffered martydom. Interestingly, his betrayal and death resembles the passion of Jesus Christ. It is said that the people of China continue to share in the passion today, as do countless others, not only in Asia, but throughout the world.
