Languages For Peace : Respect, Dialogue, Understanding, Tolerance

- a conference on the importance of languages in building relationships among people, cultures and nations and in advancing social justice and peace.

The purpose of this progressive conference is to engage participants from academics (students and faculty), business, government and non-governmental organizations in dialogue and in academic projects to deepen understanding of the importance of languages in building relationships among people, cultures and nations, and in advancing peace among all peoples.  

Conference Goals:  

•  Recognize respect for the person as the foundation for dialogue and mutual understanding among cultures and religions.

•  Reflect on and envision language, verbal and non-verbal, as a bridge to interpersonal, as well as intercultural understanding and tolerance.

•  Highlight the need for communication and agreement on a global ethic based in solidarity, development and peace.

•  Promote reflection and encourage research on the impact of languages in advancing social justice, development and peace.

•  Create a campus environment (physical, intellectual and psychological) that will stimulate informal discussion of respect, dialogue, understanding and tolerance.

Progressive Format:   Three days of events - November 7, 8 and 9 - at St. John's University
