Beatificiation of the Venerable Frederic Ozanam

On Tuesday 25 June, 1996, noon, in the stately setting of the Consistory Hall, in the Vatican, Pope John-Paul II signed the Decree recognizing the miracle obtained through Frederic Ozanam's intercession, on 2 February, 1926, in favour of Fernando Luiz Benedito Ottoni, Brazilian child aged 18 months, suffering from malignant diphtheria, at Nova Friburgo, State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Thus came to an end the long procedure introduced on March 15, 1925, in the Paris Diocese.

The celebrations of the beatification will take place in 1997. The date and place will be specified later.

This event is invested with a particular importance, owing to the radiant personality of Frederic Ozanam, French, born in Milano, April 23, 1813, died in Marseilles, September 8, 1853. Main founder of the Society of Saint-Vincent de Paul, on 23 April 1833, in Paris, he providentially realized his dream of "embracing the whole world in a network of charity." This universal brotherhood, with a charitable, social and humanitarian vocation, presently gathers some 875,000 members, spread over 47,000 Conferences (teams), in 131 countries of the five continents.

Married, father of a family, his life was, in every respect, one of exemplary integrity and transparency.

Having acquired the highest degrees in Law and Arts, he was appointed Professor at the Sorbonne (Paris University) and held the chair of foreign literature. His teaching, inspired by his thirst for truth and science, deeply impressed generations of students. His considerable works, fruit of an profound erudition, include, among others: "La civilisation au 5 siecle" (The civilization at the Vth century) - "Les Germains avant le Christianisme (The Germans before Christianity)- "La civilisation chretienne chez les Francs" (Christian civilization among the Franks) - "Les poetes franciscains en Italie m' XIIIe siecle" (The Franciscan poets in Italy at the XIIIth century) - "Le Purgatoire de Dante" (Dante's Purgatory), as well as numerous other writings in the religious, philosophical, historical and social fields.

Journalist, he created in 1848, with a group of enthusiastic Christians, "L'Ere Nouvelle", to stand vigorously for his ideal of social justice and fraternal solidarity.

Candidate in the elections for the French National Constituent Assembly of 1848, in the Rhone Department, he was the author of a bold and generous programme, through which he strongly advocates the rights and liberties of the humble, the weak and the underprivileged.

Christian enlightened by a fervent but, nevertheless, tolerant faith, his prophetic thinking has largely inspired Pope Leo XIII's Encyclical Letter "Rerum Novarum", of 1891.

Anxious to provide youth with a motivating religious teaching, with the support of his first companions, he urged Monseigneur de Quelen, Archbishop of Paris, to establish, in 1835, the "Conferences of Notre-Dame" of which the tradition remains with the renowned Lenten sermons in the Paris cathedral.

Intuitive visionary, he is the precursor of the lay apostolate, praised by the Second Vatican Council.

Frederic OzanamThese are only a few of the facets of this exceptional man, as modest as he was brilliant, of whom one still speaks too little and who, however, according to the perspicacious appreciation of Father Henri Lacordaire, a Dominican friend of Ozanam, could be considered as "one of the most prominent figures of Catholicism, in the XIXth century".

These two thoughts from Ozanam's youth are eloquent witnesses of the richness of his personality and the precocity of his sensitiveness:

"The question which divides the world nowadays is no more a matter of political forms, it is a social problem, to know which will prevail - the spirit of selfishness or the spirit of sacrifice ; if the society will be, but a great exploitation for the benefit of the strongest, or a consecration of each one for the good of all and mainly for the protection of the week."

"Charity must never look back, but always ahead, for the number of its past benefits is always quite small, as the present and future miseries i t should alleviate are infinite".
