Founder's Week
WELCOME TO THE ANNUAL
FOUNDER'S WEEK
CELEBRATION
St. John's University celebrates our Vincentian heritage and vision
with University wide programs during the week of January 25.
This week is dedicated to St. Vincent de Paul and the Vincentian mission
of St. John's. Over the past decade, the core values of the University-Love,
Respect, Service, Opportunity, Truth, Excellence have been explored thematically,
along with the themes of Forgiveness, Human Work, Just Peace and Hope.
The University established Founder's Week in 1995 to coincide with the
Feast of the Conversion of St. Paul, January 25. It was on this date
in 1617 that St. Vincent de Paul gave the first mission at Folleville,
France and recognized his vocation to found an order of priests to serve the spiritual needs
of the poor. In 1625, Vincent formally established the Congregation of
the Mission, the sponsors of St. John's.
In 1870, John Loughlin, Bishop
of Brooklyn asked Vincent's community of priests, commonly known as Vincentians,
to establish a college to provide a "moral" and academically "solid" education
for the immigrants in New York City. This college became St. John's University,
one of the largest Catholic Universities in the United States. Our five
campuses-Queens, Staten Island, Oakdale, Manhattan and Rome celebrate this heritage.
Join us as we deepen our understanding of St. Vincent de Paul and reflect
on the University Vincentian mission to discover ways each member of
the St. John's University Community-students, faculty, administrators,
staff and alumni, can carry that mission forward today.
