Celebrating Faith in Action

The Vincentian Center for Church and Society and the Office of Community Relations invite you to "Celebrate Faith in Action" as we honor St. Vincent de Paul, the Founder of the Congregation of the Mission (Vincentians), the sponsors of St. John's University. Through film, we will explore how faith in action can bring meaning, purpose and achievements far beyond our expectations.

A discussion with Rev. Robert Lauder, along with a co-host will follow each full-length film viewing .

ALL FILMS BEGIN AT 1 PM IN BENT HALL. ADMISSION IS FREE.

Chariots of Fire

1981 Directed by Hugh Hudson, starring Ian Charleson, Ben Cross. Oscar best picture of 1981, Chariots of Fire explores Great Britain's heroes in the 1924 Paris Olympics - devout Protestant Eric Liddell, a divinity student whose running makes him feel closer to God, and Harold Abrahams, a highly competitive Cambridge student of Jewish heritage who has to surmount the institutional hurdles of class prejudice and anti-Semitism. (123 minutes)

Dead Man Walking

1995 Directed by Tim Robbins, starring Susan Sarandon, Sean Penn. Adapted from the nonfiction book of the same name   by Sister Helen Prejean, this film examines the issue of capital punishment from a humanitarian perspective. (122 minutes)

Co-host: Sr. Camille D'Arienzo, RSM , Founder of Cherish Life Circle, and Adjunct Professor, Public Speaking, College of Professional Studies.

 

 

Fr Robert LauderRev. Robert Lauder is a Professor of Philosophy in St. John's College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. He holds a Ph.D. in Philosophy from Marquette University. Father Lauder is a weekly columnist in the Brooklyn Tablet and The Long Island Catholic , and is the author of over 10 books. Encouraging a continuing exploration of films and "Catholic" novels as a source of understanding faith and social relationships, Father Lauder promotes film as the "art form of our age."
