Eighth Annual

ACCULTURATION PROGRAM FOR INTERNATIONAL PRIESTS

FACULTY and MODERATOR PROFILES

June 2-6, 2008

Faculty for the ACCULTURATION PROGRAM are drawn from the St. John's University faculty, staff of the Vincentian Center, diocesan administrators, and foreign-born resident priests. Since 1995 the Vincentian Center for Church and Society at the University has offered programs in management for pastors and has worked with seminarians and priests from the three metropolitan New York dioceses.

Larry Boone , PhD. A graduate of Lehigh University in Pennsylvania, Dr. Boone earned both his graduate degrees (M.S.I.E. and Ph.D.) at the University of Pittsburgh. An associate professor in the department of Management, Larry has served in various administrative positions at St. John's including Interim Dean of the College of Business Administration. He played an important role in the development of the graduate program (MBA) on the Rome Campus of St. John's. He is the Director of the Executives-in-Residence Program at The Tobin College of Business.

Barrett P. Brenton, Ph.D. holds a B.S. from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and a M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.   He is an Associate Professor of Anthropology at St. John's University. His cross-cultural research is focused on international food security and policy, meeting the healthcare needs of the poor, and the health consequences of dietary change.   Prof. Brenton's applied research experience has taken him to the Peruvian Andes, Western Kenya, South Africa, American Indian reservations, and to rural and urban impoverished communities across the U.S.

Mary Ann Dantuono, J.D., earned her undergraduate degree in Communications at Fordham University and her J.D. degree at St. John's University School of Law. Mary Ann is the Associate Director of the Vincentian Center for Church and Society at St. John's and is an Adjunct Professor of Law in the Legal Studies Program.   She previously served the Diocese of Rockville Centre as the Director of Public Policy and Legal Affairs for Catholic Charities.

Edward Doran, Ph.D.   Fr. Doran has held a variety of priestly and educational positions including service as a college chaplain and pastorates at two parishes in the Brooklyn Diocese as well as guidance, teaching and administrative positions at the secondary and higher education levels.   He earned his master's degree in counseling at Seton Hall University and his Doctorate in counselor education at St. John's University where he now serves as an adjunct professor. He has completed graduate studies at Fordham University in Eastern Christian Studies as well.   Father is currently pastor of St. Gerard Magella in Queens, NY.

Robert Eschenauer, Ph.D., serves at St. John's in the School of Education and chairs the Human Services and Counseling department. He earned his doctorate in counseling at St. John's. He served at Lehman College in Specialized Services in Education and as Clinical Coordinator in the Counseling Program, and at Iona and Brooklyn Colleges. Dr. Eschenauer holds advanced certificates in School Psychology and in Hypnosis. In addition to membership in various counseling and psychological associations, he serves as a resource consultant to the New York City schools and to the Diocese of Brooklyn Permanent Deaconate Program.

John B. Freund. C.M, S.T.L. Currently, Fr. Freund serves as Technology Advisor for the International Congregation of the Mission, and as a consultant in the Vincentian Center. Fr. Freund offers workshops throughout the country on the use of the Internet in the Service of Ministry and the Poor. Father was ordained in May of 1965, and holds a STL from the University of Fribourg in Switzerland. He taught 5 years in St. Vincent DePaul Seminary, Florida, and Our Lady of Angels in Albany before returning to St. John's where he taught for over 25 years. He also chaired the theology department at St. John's University.

Otto L. Garcia , J.C.D.   After serving the Diocese of Brooklyn as Vicar General and Moderator of the Curia for several years, Monsignor Garcia currently is Pastor of St. Joan of Arc in Jackson Heights, Queens NY. He completed his priestly studies at Cathedral College and North American College in Rome.   Msgr. Garcia earned his J.C.D. and S.T.B. at the Gregorian University in Rome and is an authority on the Vatican II text Lumen Gentium . Monsignor serves on the Presbyteral Council, The Board of Consultors, Catholic Charities Board of Directors, Corporation of the Catholic Medical Center, and is a Trustee of St. John's University.   He is a professor in the J.C.L. Program at Catholic University of America and a member of the Canon Law Society of America. He is a native of Cuba,

John Greg, Ph.D., an alumnus of St. John's University, is an Associate Professor, Speech, Communication Sciences and Theatre in St. John's College.   He earned his M.A. and Ph.D. from Wayne State University in Michigan.   He has taught homiletics to seminarians and conducts Retreat Preaching Workshops and Evaluations. He is a member of many professional associations and committees.

Margaret John Kelly D.C, Ph.D. A native of Strafford, Pennsylvania, Sister earned her undergraduate degree at St. Joseph College in Emmitsburg, Maryland, and her master's and doctoral degrees in English at St. John's University.   She has held faculty and administrative positions at St. Joseph College, Laboure College, and St. John's University where she currently serves as Executive Director of the Vincentian Center for Church and Society. Sister Margaret John has held leadership positions in her community, the Daughters of Charity, and in several professional organizations.   She also serves on the boards of several health care organizations.

Flora Keshishian, Ph.D., a native of Persia, is a professor in the Department of Speech, Communication Sciences and Theatre at St. John's University. She holds a Ph.D. from New York University, completing a dissertation in media ecology, which deals with the cultural context of communication. Dr. Keshishian teaches Interpersonal Communication and Intercultural Communication and has taught at Queens College, Montclair State and New York University as well as offering lectures and papers at several international conferences. Fluent in Persian, Armenian, with knowledge of both French and Arabic languages, she is a poet and artist as well.

Ronald T. Marino, V.E. is the Director of the Catholic Migration Office of the Diocese of Brooklyn and also the Director of Resources, Inc. of the Diocese of Brooklyn, occupational training programs for immigrants.   Msgr. Marino holds an M.S. in Education from St. John's University, M.Div. from Immaculate Conception Seminary, Huntington and a B.A from Cathedral College, Douglaston.   He is a recognized national and international public speaker on immigration issues and on The Catholic Church and Immigrants .   Monsignor serves on numerous Boards and committees and has a special interest in Italian American Organizations and Apostolates.

Donald R. Pitti C.F.A., is the founding Director of the Financial Services Institute in the Tobin College of Business at St. John's University in New York.   Mr. Pitti retired as President and CEO of Seligman Financial Services, Inc., which manages over $35 billion in assets. He is currently Chairman Emeritus and a Trustee of the Foundation for Financial Planning.   Mr. Pitti has been a guest speaker at many financial services conferences and has appeared on radio and television programs, including Wall Street Week. He holds a B.A. from New York University and did graduate work at Adelphi University.

Jean-Pierre Ruiz, S.T.D., a priest of the Diocese of Brooklyn, has served on St. John's T heology faculty from 1991 and as chair of the Department of Theology and Religious Studies 1997-2003. He earned his bachelor's, licentiate and doctoral degrees at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome.   A specialist in Biblical Studies, he has published widely on scriptural issues and presented in various media. He has served as president and board member of the Academy of Catholic Hispanic Theologians and is the editor of Journal of Hispanic/Latino Theology.

Eugene Sullivan An alumnus of St. John's, Mr. Sullivan received an M.B.A. from New York University, with a major in marketing. He served for many years as President, Chief Operating Officer, and Chief Executive Officer of Borden, Inc. In 1987, he was appointed Chairman of the Commission on Catholic Health Care Ministry in the US, which is sponsored by the Catholic Hospital Association and the National Conference of Catholic Bishops. He has served on numerous hospital boards and other organizations.   Mr. Sullivan has served as a Trustee of St. John's University and was Chairman of the Board of Trustees 1999-2000.   He recently retired as a full Professor in the College of Business Administration and remains a guest lecturer in several graduate courses.

Michael D. Whalen, C.M., S.T.D., is an Associate Professor of Theology in St. Johns College. His recently published books are: Sermons and Feasts of the Church Year; Remembering the Saints; On the Threshold of Mystery:   An Introduction to Sacrament; and Liturgical Catechesis: An Historical Overview and American Contributions.   He has published numerous other articles and has given major addresses at Religious Education and Liturgical conferences.   He holds an S.T.D. in Historical Theology: Ritual Studies and a S.T.L. in Liturgical and Sacramental Theology from the Catholic University of America.   He earned a M.A. in Religious Education from LaSalle University, a M.A. in Systematic Theology from St. Charles Seminary, a Th.M. and a M.Div. from Mary Immaculate Seminary, and a B.A. in English from Niagara University.
