Mission
The Vincentian Center for Church and Society serves as a clearinghouse for and developer of Vincentian information, poverty research, social justice resources, and as an academic/cultural programming Center. It sponsors the Vincentian Chair of Social Justice, the Institute on Poverty Studies, and Religion and Science Dialogue. While many of its activities relate the University to local communities and the Church of Metropolitan New York, the Center also supports specialized projects linking it nationally and globally.

Activities
To accomplish its mission, the Center

  • Motivates Vincentian expertise, promotes experiences and develops materials to animate the Vincentian vision and spirit within the University.
  • Houses the Vincentian Chair of Social Justice.
  • Supports the Institute for Poverty Studies.
  • Sponsors the Religion and Science Dialogue.
  • Offers academic and cultural programs for the University and public.
  • Develops curriculum and offers educational programs for Church personnel in such areas as management, evangelization, marketing, and advocacy.
  • Encourages and facilitates interdisciplinary research and reflection on Catholic Social Teaching, social justice, poverty, advocacy, and the science/religion relationship.
  • Provides facilitation and consulting services to Church organizations.

Goals
The Vincentian Center for Church and Society relates St. John's University with the Church and service organizations as well as with the greater community. Therefore the Center:

  • encourages rigorous social and theological reflection on issues of mutual concern to the Church and the University;
  • facilitates study of causes and the alleviation of poverty; promotes interdisciplinary research and programs;
  • develops and sponsors educational programs in management, evangelization, and other subjects to strengthen Church personnel and Church organizations;
  • organizes and sponsors academic and cultural events focused on human values, human rights, and religion/science relationship;
  • initiates forums, think-tanks, roundtables and conferences to educate and encourage Church, academic and community leaders and service providers;
  • sponsors events directed at public policy analysis and service advocacy; maintains and publishes information on University service to the greater community and facilitates the Service Opportunities Council;
  • maintains current inventories of University resource specialists in areas related to poverty, social justice, religion and science, community service advocacy, and other disciplines;
  • stimulates interest in and enthusiasm for the Vincentian spirit and tradition within the University;
  • produces and distributes materials on Vincentianism, social justice, poverty.
